It’s been too long since I’ve updated. My wrist has been severely slapped. I’ve received several frowns from my love (which is worse than any punishment I can think of).
I am signed up and doing NaNoWriMo 2012. I’ve had my best writing come out of NaNoWriMo
I have some thoughts to share.
The outline is done. After sending it out, I saw some problems which I’ve fixed (we’ll see what the feedback/suggestions will be). I’ve added a few scenes. All the scenes are entered in yWriter. All the characters, notes and scribbles and notions are entered. I’ve even gotten a new idea that just twists everything around in a really good way. It’s as good and as detailed as it’s going to get without getting into the really fiddly bits.
I could spend more and more time with less and less returns.
I’ve laid in a serious stock of Diet Mountain Dew (writer’s fuel for me).
It’s time to write.
Tonight, after the baby goes down, there’s gonna be writing.
The Bell is ringing. This time, I’m not stopping til Revenant is done and sent.
I’m still alive and writing!
The workshop which started in January has been a surprising amount of effort (In a good way!) and between that and my own writing efforts, I haven’t been updating this blog as much as I’d like. I will miss it (and the folks in it) when it ends.
Thankfully I’m up at Stupid O’ Clock this morning and the munchkin is fast asleep and I’m in a procrastinating mood (I should be working on either my outline or my assignment). It’s a perfect time to write an update!
So what’s going on?
I’m overdue on re-reading The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I wanted to write a little update on everything.
Things are progressing apace. I’m almost done my second pass through Revenant. I’m hoping to get to some writing on that soon. I really want to be able to send it out this year.
Outside of editting, I was hit by a great idea for a short story that I’m calling “The Hunter”. I’ve started working on that a bit. In my head, as I play with it, I’m enjoying the fact that it can work equally well as a fantasy or as science fiction. I might write both for giggles and bits.
The big news is that I’ve signed up for a Writer’s Workshop at The Thomas More Institute here in town. It’s a small group, led by published authors and it turns out I already have one of the class book assignments on my Kindle app (I don’t know if they’ll insist I buy a physical copy, we’ll see). The price isn’t too expensive and from the curriculum I think I will get a lot out of it.
The only thing not really working right now is that I’m not keeping up my word count. I’m still writing daily, but there’s been more than a few 300 word days. This will change.
Reading wise, I’ve been rather voracious. I’ve gone through Southern Gods by John Horner Jacods, the Matt Richter novels by Tim Waggoner (just finished Dark War) and On Writing (which I start over and over and never finish, this time I finished it).
I’m not much for reviews, but for what it’s worth, I highly recommend the Matt Richter novels (Nekropolis, Dead Streets and Dark War). They are light, well written and well paced and the setting is well thought out and interesting. Southern Gods was also very well written and I liked the idea of a story set in the post WWII south, but it was “sold” to me as an exploration of blues legends, kind of a delta blues fantasy/horror story which I thought would be neat. It turns out it really isn’t like that and while it was still good, I was slightly disappointed and the ending scenes were a little too gory for my tastes.
You may have noted that I have not been updating as often and that my posts have been mostly about word count. I do apologize and I promise that once Labour Day is past, I will be contributing better to this blog.
I’m on track to break 20K for the month tonight, or at the latest, tomorrow. I’m still behind but not disasterously so.
How’s my August?
It’s Tuesday and it feels like Wednesday or later, this is the rare time where this is a good thing.
I cruised by 35K yesterday and my current goal is to hit 40K by tomorrow night (natch). I’ve got some good stuff on deck and I can easily fill 15K with it. I am good to go.
Writing group on Sunday was fun and productive. The weather was perfect to sit outside, so I made the most of it. I got to discuss writing and writing related matters with two of the most intelligent people I know. I got some great feedback as well.
They managed to put into words what I sensed was wrong with my short story “Kenneth” and I intend to do a serious rewrite in September taking those notes in consideration. That was a great learning experience. I will try to do better and I can’t wait to see the outcome!
We brainstormed my WIP and came up with some really great ideas and some things that I need to think about. More and more, I see that I’ve neglected my characters in planning this thing. It’ll be something to consider when I rewrite in a few months.
I also got a chance to discuss their works, which is something that I’m very interested in. I want to help as much as they help me. In helping them, I learn.
All in all, it was a success and charred meat was had in celebration! It made for a great day in a great weekend.
Well I’ve cracked 32K which means only 18K to go by Saturday midnight! Piece of cake! Officially, the July Camp NaNoWriMo session gives the 31st as the end date of the challenge, but again, I’m following the 50K in 30 days I’m used to. I plan to finish Saturday and rest one day before starting again for the final leg of the marathon.
Today’s the first meeting of my writing group. I’m excited! I’m hoping it will go well and does what I intend and imagine it will do. The writers coming are people who’s writing and opinions I respect as well as good friends, so no matter what, it’s all good.
I’m off to get some word count down before Anna gets up. She’s been off her normal sleep patterns last couple of days and it’s made those days rather challenging.
