I’ve done a slight disservice to a few people this month on the subject of NaNoWriMo in regards to the target of 50 000 words. I’m not alone in having done so, and it’s not particularly egregious or anything but it bothers me enough that I wanted to set the record straight for me.
I’ve been a little too blasé about reaching 50K
It’s been too long since I’ve updated. My wrist has been severely slapped. I’ve received several frowns from my love (which is worse than any punishment I can think of).
I am signed up and doing NaNoWriMo 2012. I’ve had my best writing come out of NaNoWriMo
I have some thoughts to share.
It’s the 31st. It’s a brand new day. I’m flush with a second back to back NaNoWriMo win.
The manuscript is not done however and I’ve put in another 500 words this morning and more are coming. I know that if I stop and take a break because I’ve made the word count, there’s a chance I won’t finish the book. It would be a shame. A finished first draft is easily moved up on deck when you decide to revise it. An aborted draft is just, well, unfinished and it’s hard to put a decent ending on something when you let it sit too long.
Whereas, you should let a manuscript stew a while before going back for revision.
So how did August go in general? Impressions and thoughts below:
OH MY GOD I MADE IT!
100K. I’ve just reached 100K.
I’m really tired. I’m going to bed now.
The book isn’t finished, there’s still a couple of thousand words to be written down and they will be written tomorrow.
More to follow on this soon. It was such a great ride. It’s a great story. It will need a lot of work and a lot of love in the coming months, but it’ll be worth it.

Wow. Time flies. It’s been a while since I’ve updated and I’m very sorry about that, but my priority has been to make it to 100K.
I struggled and I flew. Last thursday was my best and most fun writing day. Friday was a fail for many reasons but it’s all good.
I’ve reached 90K and 100K is in sight. Depending on how much I write tonight (lots), I might even finish tomorrow!
You may have noted that I have not been updating as often and that my posts have been mostly about word count. I do apologize and I promise that once Labour Day is past, I will be contributing better to this blog.
I’m on track to break 20K for the month tonight, or at the latest, tomorrow. I’m still behind but not disasterously so.
How’s my August?
Before I say anything else, once again the inestimable John Scalzi expresses some of what I feel in a much better way than I can do at this time about the general state of the world.
So what’s going on with me?
I apologize for the lack of updates but I’ve been refilling the well. I’m on vacation this week and while I expected to be a writing machine, it turns out quite different. I’ve been sick and I’ve been rather tired so I took a break. I’m still writing and on track for that 100K by the 30th, never fear. It’s just nice to have a few days to laze around.
I’m working to get caught up today. There’s some good stuff to write about and I’m having a lot of fun with the scenes. Stay tuned for increasing word count!
I made it! Phase one complete! 50011 words at 9h40pm (plenty of time to spare). It wasn’t easy. I seem to have caught a severe head cold and my sinuses are aching. Now, I have one day of break tomorrow and I start in on phase 2, another 50K in August! Wish me luck.

Well, I’ve just hit 46K this morning. It’s stupid early but I couldn’t sleep, might as well use the time.
We’re almost home for the July session.
Today, we’re taking the munchkin to a nearby beach with some friends and family. After that, my lovely wife will be going out with friends while I am left to finish the first stage of this crazy thing. 3000 words by midnight tonight. Camp NaNoWriMo’s deadline is tomorrow, but I prefer following the 50 in 30 rule and take tomorrow OFF. I’m starting to have get a cold and I think it’ll be nice to be lazy one well earned day.
Next week I am on vacation, which will be awesome for both word count and other writing related activities. I can’t wait!
